Our relationship with our Guardian Angel is a type of spiritual guidance and tutelage that can be nurtured through prayer, so for centuries the Church has encouraged the faithful pray the Guardian Angel Prayer to strengthen our bonds of friendship with our personal angel.

Many saints have composed prayers to the angels throughout the centuries, but our traditional Guardian Angel Prayer dates back to the 11th Century – nearly a thousand years! A companion of St. Anselm of Canterbury, a Benedictine monk named Reginald, composed the prayer and added it to the writings of St. Anselm. The prayer we have today is a 19th Century English translation from the Latin prayer of Reginald, Angele Dei.

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here;
Ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.
